Many families are choosing to purchase only organic products, from the foods that they eat to the cosmetics that they put on their bodies, in order to get healthier and avoid exposure to genetically modified organisms and toxins like pesticides. But does eating only organic food truly make a difference? Is it worth spending more money on organic food than on conventional options? Keep reading to access the answer to this important question so you can make the right choices for yourself and your family.
The Organic Effect
The Organic Effect is the name of a project conducted by the Swedish Environmental Research Institute. It was commissioned by Coop, which is a Swedish supermarket chain, and its purpose was to study the effects of pesticides from foods in the bodies of those who eat conventional products.
A Swedish family of five was used for the study because they did not usually consume organic food, so they were a great way to gauge the effects of eating only organic food for a change.
How the Experiment Was Conducted
First, the family was told to consume nothing but conventional foods for an entire week. Then they were told to eat only organic varieties for two weeks. Researchers were able to test the urine of the family members for pesticides throughout the experiment, and the results were surprising.
What Did the Results Say?
At the end of the experiment, it became clear that a diet filled with conventional foods will leave a significant amount of pesticide residue within the body. In fact, the average concentration of pesticides while on a conventional diet was about 9 times higher than when on an organic diet.
After the two weeks of eating only organic food was complete, the pesticides that were once in the bodies of the family members were nearly totally gone. The results of this experiment also prove that, given the chance, the body can detoxify, but you need to consume clean, organic foods in order to give it the break that it needs to clean itself out.
Even though this was a simple experiment, it does prove the impact that an organic diet can have upon overall health. If you are feeling sluggish or unwell, consider switching to an organic diet, as you will be giving your body the chance to detoxify itself from the harmful pesticides and chemicals found in and on conventional foods.
